Lemosho Route 8 Days

Page: Lemosho Route 8 Days

Overview

The remote and staggeringly scenic Lemosho Route takes 7-8 days to ascend Kilimanjaro along its least crowded trail. With more days gaining altitude gradually, acclimatization happens naturally to maximize summit success. From untouched rainforests to icy peaks, panoramic views abound.

Day By Day Itinerary

We start high on the quieter west side at Lemosho Glades (9,000 ft) with a gentle walk through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Nestled on the Shira Plateau, the first camp has us turning in early after a hot meal under the stars.

A steady climb up the forested ridge brings us above the clouds today. Giant heathers and sparkling quartz rocks dot the lunar-like landscape surrounding Shira 1 Camp (12,500 ft). After pitching our tents, we hike a nearby hill for magnificent sunset views and acclimatization.

Another moderate gain in altitude today reaches peaceful Shira 2 Camp (13,000 ft), our launch point for the tricky Lava Tower climb tomorrow. We spend the afternoon resting, with the chance to practice using crampons or wander photographing unique plants like giant groundsel.

Our longest and toughest day yet crosses arid terrain to Lava Tower (15,190 ft). Scrambling up the steep climb reveals 360° vistas from Kilimanjaro’s alien-looking alpine desert. After a snack, we make our way down to forested Barranco Camp (13,000 ft) to overnight.

The famous Barranco Wall caps off a short but intense morning of rock scrambling. Conquering the near-vertical climb brings triumphant views! Then we traverse the Barranco Valley to Karanga Camp (13,500 ft) for the afternoon. We refuel with soup and tea at camp before an early bedtime.

The landscape turns steeper again en route to Barafu Camp (15,300 ft), our last stop before attempting the summit. At this altitude, sub-freezing temperatures and bone-dry air make conditions extremely arduous. We gear up for tomorrow’s ultimate challenge - a midnight start for Uhuru Peak!

Through the night we push slowly up Switchback Rocks and Stella Point to the Uhuru summit (19,341 ft), reaching the top in time to watch the sun rise. After celebrating our monumental achievement overlooking glaciers and the clouds below, we descend to Mweka Camp (10,000 ft).

On our last day, we follow the zigzagging rock stairs down into the lush forest. Our successful Lemosho Route adventure ends where we started - at Londorossi Gate!
