Page: 6-Day Umbwe Route
Overview
The steep and swift Umbwe Route ascends the southern slopes in just 5-6 days, recommended for experienced trekkers comfortable with rugged terrain. Passing through the rainforest and the imposing Barranco Wall rockface, Umbwe provides a direct yet difficult path to the summit.
Day By Day Itinerary
From remote Umbwe Gate, we start with a tough climb through dense jungle to Umbwe Cave Camp (10,200 ft). Set inside giant overhanging rocks, our first site lets us refuel and relax by the river before tomorrow.
After a sweaty hike gaining 4,000 ft in elevation through the forest, we finally emerge above the trees. Crossing the rocky heath and moorlands, we reach the famous Barranco Camp (13,000 ft) with its views into steep ravines.
Prepared for the toughest day yet, we tackle the near-vertical Barranco Wall rock face, scrambling up over 800 ft worth of cliffs. Conquering it brings triumphant views! Gentler trails then lead us to Karanga Camp (13,500 ft).
We traverse steep and rocky ridges blanketed with giant senecio plants to reach Barafu Camp (15,300 ft). Set on an Alpine desert plateau, this base camp has subzero temps and thin oxygen levels making for an very tough overnight stay.
Around midnight, we start our final ascent to reach Uhuru summit (19,341 ft) in time for sunrise over the glaciers. After celebrations and photos, we descend back to Mweka Camp (10,000 ft) exhausted but accomplished!
On our last day, we hike through lush forest trails to Mweka Gate, ready to reward ourselves after conquering Kilimanjaro in under a week!
